I help high-achieving women who are trauma survivors struggling with anxiety, overwhelm and chronic pain so they can find new meaning in their life and reclaim their energy.

You’re committed to your career and family, always giving your best to everything you do. But beneath it all, the chronic pain, anxiety, and overwhelm never let up.
You've been searching for a way to navigate it all without turning to medications that numb your feelings or adding even more to your already full plate. But no matter how hard you try, you’re stuck… You’ve probably heard things like, “Just manage your stress better,” or “You’re strong, you’ll get through this,” and been given prescriptions or a few days off work to “recharge.”
You’ve tried everything maybe some things helped, but nothing has touched the deep, constant hum of pain and anxiety that’s been with you for so long.
When trauma is embedded in your nervous system, surface level fixes just can’t reach it. Not because you’re doing them wrong, but because they weren’t designed for this. You feel like you’re running on autopilot, but deep down, you know you can’t keep up this level of survival much longer. You maintain a successful career, keep your family going, and show up for everyone else but you can’t remember the last time you truly felt okay.
You’re not alone. And you’re not broken. You’ve just been surviving for a really long time. You want your life beyond trauma.
You want your life back. You want to feel like yourself again where you have enough energy to enjoy the things you used to love. You want to have fun days out with your family, feel connected with your partner again, and finally make time for yourself.
If this sounds like you, you’re in the right place for trauma healing for high-achieving women. This is your moment to step into the life you truly deserve, and I’m here to walk beside you every step of the way. I’ll meet you exactly where you are, offering the support you need to reclaim your strength and heal for good.
True trauma support isn’t about becoming someone else it’s about rediscovering and embracing the powerful, whole person you’ve always been it’s about coming home to yourself.
So, let’s take that first step together.
You are driven, resilient, and high achieving a woman who has poured herself into building a successful career or business, often becoming the go to leader, the problem solver, or the support system for others. On the outside, you appear confident and composed, someone who “has it all together.” But beneath that strength lies a deep, persistent exhaustion.
You are a trauma survivor whether the trauma was from childhood, relationships, loss, or other life-altering events, you've learned how to survive, push through, and “keep going” no matter what. Your strength helped you climb the ladder and succeed in business, but it came at a cost.
Now, you find yourself:
Overwhelmed by constant pressure, never feeling like you can fully relax or let your guard down.
Anxious even when things are going well, as if waiting for the next crisis to hit.
Experiencing chronic pain or physical tension, your body carrying the weight of years of unresolved trauma and stress.
Disconnected from yourself, unsure of what you even need because you're so used to being in “survival mode.”
Struggling to be present with your family or loved ones, feeling guilt for not having more time or energy to give.
Craving peace, but unsure how to slow down without everything falling apart.
You have tried therapy, yoga, self help books, or quick fix solutions, but nothing seems to reach the core of what you're feeling. You're successful but you're not free. Not yet. Deep down, you know there has to be more to life beyond trauma than just pushing through. You want to feel safe in your own body, connected to yourself and to the people you love. You want to stop surviving and start living.
If you are experiencing any or all of these symptoms, and you are looking to truly heal from your past once and for all, you are in the right place.

"I didn’t realize how much of my life was still being controlled by my trauma until I started working with Caroline. From the very first session, I felt something shift. She held space for me in a way no one ever has. She didn’t try to ‘fix’ me she helped me find me. The Life Beyond Trauma Method gave me tools, language, and strength to finally understand what I’dbeen
carrying and how to let it go. I feel grounded. I feel powerful. And for the first time in years, I feel free. This work saved my life and brought me back to it.

To get out of freeze mode, go gently. Pushing yourself with pressure, caffeine or harsh self-talk can keep the nervous system on alert. A slower approach tends to work better: name the state without judgement, lower the demands on yourself, add a little safe movement, take small steps with pauses in between, and choose one tiny action. Coming out of freeze is usually gradual, and that's okay.
You know what needs doing. The emails, the washing, the call you've been putting off.
You tell yourself to get up. You try to push through.
And somehow, the harder you push, the more stuck you feel.
If this sounds familiar, you may be in freeze mode. The good news is that there are gentler ways out. In this blog, we'll look at why forcing yourself rarely works, what coming out of freeze can feel like, and five steps that may help you move forward without fighting your own body.
Freeze is one of the nervous system's survival responses, alongside fight, flight and fawn. When the body senses a threat it can't fight or escape, it slows down to protect you. Energy drops, emotions go quiet and moving forward feels heavy.
Being "stuck" in freeze means the nervous system keeps returning to this state long after the original danger has passed. Ongoing stress, overwhelm or old trauma can keep the body in protection mode, even in an ordinary day.
For many women, this looks like getting through the day on autopilot and then collapsing in the evening. You might be functioning well enough that no one else notices. You can read more about this in our article on functional freeze symptoms.
When we feel stuck, most of us reach for pressure:
Strong coffee to get going
Long to-do lists and strict deadlines
Telling ourselves to "just get on with it"
Criticising ourselves for being lazy
The difficulty is that freeze is a protective state. When you add pressure, your nervous system may read it as yet more threat. So instead of easing out, your body holds on tighter.
Some women find they swing between the two: a burst of anxious, driven energy, followed by an even deeper crash. That cycle is exhausting, and it can leave you feeling as though you're failing when your body is simply trying to keep you safe.
Coming out of freeze is often called "thawing", and it doesn't always feel calm.
As your nervous system starts to move again, you may notice:
Feelings returning, sometimes all at once
Restlessness, irritability or an urge to move
Tears that seem to come from nowhere
Shakiness, warmth or tingling in your body
Tiredness, as your body finally lets go
Many people find this unsettling, but it can be a sign that energy is starting to move again. If it feels like too much, that's a cue to slow down, come back to something comforting, and take smaller steps.
Simply notice and say to yourself, "I'm in freeze right now."
Naming the state can take away some of the shame. It reminds you that this is your nervous system responding, and nothing is wrong with you as a person.
Before asking your body to do anything, make the moment a little easier. Wrap yourself in a blanket, sit somewhere comfortable, make a warm drink, or turn down the noise around you.
Lowering the pressure tells your nervous system it doesn't need to stay on guard.
Freeze holds energy still, so gentle movement can help it start flowing again. Wiggle your fingers and toes, roll your shoulders, or press your feet into the floor.
Keep it small. If you'd like more ideas, our guide to grounding techniques for the freeze response walks through six you can try.
Rather than trying to snap out of freeze in one go, work in small pieces. Try something gentle for a minute, then pause and notice how your body feels.
You can also move your attention back and forth: notice where you feel heavy or stuck, then shift your focus to somewhere that feels neutral or comfortable, such as your hands or the support of the chair. This back-and-forth can help your body come out of freeze without becoming overwhelmed.
Once you feel even slightly more present, pick the smallest possible next step. Drink a glass of water. Open a window. Answer one message.
Small, achievable actions help build a sense of "I can", which is often exactly what freeze takes away.
Your breathing deepens or you sigh without trying
You feel a little more warmth or sensation in your body
Colours and sounds seem a bit sharper
You feel more able to start small tasks
Emotions feel closer to the surface
Every one of these is worth noticing. Small shifts count, and over time they can help loosen old trauma patterns.
Self-help steps can be useful, but they aren't a replacement for professional care. It may help to speak with a trauma-informed therapist if:
you feel stuck in freeze most days
thawing brings up emotions or memories that feel too big to manage
freeze is affecting your work, relationships or daily life
Freeze and low mood can sometimes overlap, so it's also worth speaking to your GP if you've been feeling flat or hopeless for a while.
When you're stuck in freeze, asking for help can feel like one more thing you can't manage. You don't need to have it all figured out first.
I'm Caroline Reed, a psychotherapist (MA, MSW, MBACP) with more than 25 years of clinical experience. I help women understand their nervous system and gently move out of survival states like freeze, using body-based (somatic) trauma therapy. Being stuck in freeze mode means your nervous system keeps returning to a protective shutdown state after the danger has passed. You may feel numb, heavy, foggy or unable to get started, even when you want to. It's a survival response, not a personal failing.
Freeze is the body's way of protecting you, so it doesn't respond well to pressure. Pushing yourself harder can feel like more threat to your nervous system. Ongoing stress, lack of rest and unresolved trauma can also keep the body in protection mode.
Start by naming the state without judgement, then create a little comfort and safety. Add small, gentle movements, work in short steps with pauses, and choose one tiny action. Going slowly often helps the nervous system come out of freeze more steadily.
As freeze lifts, feelings and energy can return. Some women notice restlessness, tears, shakiness, warmth or tiredness. This is often called thawing. If it feels overwhelming, slow down and come back to something comforting before continuing.
Many people do. As the nervous system moves out of shutdown, it can pass through more activated feelings before settling. Taking smaller steps and pausing often can make this easier. If emotions feel too big to manage, a trauma-informed therapist can help.
Yes. Some people spend long periods in freeze, especially during ongoing stress or after trauma. From the outside they may seem to be coping well. Gentle, consistent support for the nervous system may help, and how long it takes varies from person to person.
Freeze is a nervous system survival state, while depression is a mental health condition that needs proper assessment. The two can feel similar and sometimes overlap. If you've been feeling low, flat or hopeless for a while, please speak to your GP or a qualified professional.
Many people find that trauma-informed therapy, especially somatic or body-based approaches, supports them in understanding freeze and gently moving out of it. A therapist can help you work at a pace that feels safe for your body.
